Welcome

“It is in the order to really see, to see ever deeper, ever more intensely, hence to be fully aware and alive, that I draw what the Chinese call ‘The Ten Thousand Things’ around me. Drawing is the discipline by which I constantly rediscover the world.

I have learned that what I have not drawn, I have never really seen, and that when I start drawing an ordinary thing, I realize how extraordinary it is”.

(Frederick Franck, ‘The Zen of Seeing’).

225 -Miles -(Revolution Series1)

Another digital painting using Painter 2015 demo and probably my last as I've only got a couple of days left on it and I'm back to work tomorrow after a lovely week off :(
So am I tempted to upgrade? Absolutely. To be fair, I only brushed the surface (pardon the pun) and rarely ventured out of the Charcoal brushes doing these two paintings but it just feels like you're drawing traditionally. Still the upgrade price at £159 is nothing to be sniffed at and I'm planning on doing some more paintings using software that I already own to see if I really do NEED it as opposed to just wanting it cos it's the latest version.

224- Norah Clayton (Revolution series 1)

Currently trying out a demo version of Corel Painter 2015 as I'm just not prepared to pay Adobe prices for an upgrade to CS6 or pay a ridiculously priced monthly subscription  - bally pirates!
The good news about this update is that you can now get the upgrade price if you have any version from 7 upwards, well done Corel!

217-223 Rules of Engagement

I love the characters in this show, very funny. Initially drawn separately as an exercise to capture a likeness, I then arranged them into this group picture.

170-175 Strictly Sketches

I thought it would be a good exercise to do a group picture of some of the Strictly Dancing cast so these are 'the start' of my trying to get a likeness sketches. I'm a big fan of the 'Mad' comics and artists like Mort Drucker and Tom Richmond and would love to do a picture in a similar style.

147- The Umbrella

A copy of George Cruikshank's The Umbrella drawn digitally using Sketchbook Pro. I found a copy of the original online and thought it was just a really funny picture, in hindsight, I wish I had drawn it first in pencil and then inked and coloured it. Maybe next time.

141 -142 Lost

Thought I'd have a go sketching a couple of characters from 'Lost' as I'm finally getting it watched courtesy of LoveFilm. Ben Linus is a great character and has some very funny lines whilst Sawyer only has the two.... "hey freckles, and son of a B...." Any-who, these were drawn using the Copic Edition of SketchBook Pro which is a free download.
***
Just an update on the Free Copic Edition and it's limitations. You can save your work but if you use several layers they get merged together and you can only open the layers using the full Sketchbook Pro software. However you can save your work, including layers, as a Photoshop PSD file.

134- The 'Young' Apprentice

A digital painting of Ben Fowler using Photoshop CS5.5

133- Frankie Cocozza

Not a great sketch but I didn't want a whole month to go by without drawing something.

131-132 Margaret Rutherford

Finally got back to doing some sketching yesterday after a good month or so of inactivity. The main reason has been to do with a lack of both time and energy after starting work last month. Things have settled down a bit now, routines etc and hopefully I can get my drawing back on track.

These two sketches done over the last two days started as studies of Margaret Rutherford. Her Miss Marple movies have been playing on TV recently and I thought she would make a great subject for a portrait or a caricature, she was such a great character.

80- The Apprentice 2011

Could have spent a bit longer on the detail but I wanted to get it uploaded in time for the start of the new series tonight. I hope it lives up to expectations!

74- Alan Sugar sketch (Sketchbook Pro)

It doesn't seem like that long since the last series but I'm not complaining, I'm a big fan of the show and looking forward to watching the new series. I only managed to draw a few of the contestants from the last series so this time round I'm hoping to have a go at them all!

71-Work in progress

I spent the first few days of last week working on this painting and since then I've been dragging my heals, so I'm posting it as a work in progress to hopefully spur me on to finish it.

69-Assad

This painting was done in about 1½ hours and was meant to be a quickie! I love doing the daily sketch or painting but my tendency is to spend too much time on them leaving little time for anything else. So although I am going to try and keep it up, I do need to re-think the subject matter and try to remember that I am still learning and that the work doesn't have to be perfect every time. As a subject matter, I chose this because he was on the first page of the Sky news website and looks a little unusual!

67- Richard Pryor

I wasn't happy with yesterday's sketch so I thought I'd redo it today with the aid of Photoshop. I used the original sketch but added a lot more darks which I find is a lot easier to do digitally. Richard Pryor was definitely one of my heroes of comedy during my early to mid teens, especially when he was teamed up with Gene Wilder.... I suddenly feel like watching 'Stir Crazy' again!
